Surroundings
Do you like peace and quiet, nature, culture? Would you like to try the excellent kitchen of the Périgord? Are you into outside activities? If so, you will love Monpazier and its surroundings.
Monpazier, founded in 1284 by the King of England, King Edward I, is considered the model-bastide (fortified village) among the 300 bastides in the Southwest of France. Bastides have nearly always been built according to the same design. In Monpazier you find a village-square surrounded by arcades and the typical rectilinear streetplan. The square is also surrounded by houses built from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. This listed and protected Mediaeval village is in a near perfect condition, in spite of the Hundred Years War and other religious wars. You will discover many historical buildings, often classified as monuments.
The village-square is only a 2 minute walk from the hotel Edward 1er. There are shops and cafes. On Thursdays there is a traditional market in the square with many stalls selling crafts and regional produce.
History
The Dordogne is world famous for its prehistoric sites, such as the caves of Lascaux, Font de Gaumes and the renowned national museum of prehistory in Les Eyzies. It was also an important area in the Middle Ages, in which many fortified villages were built, like Domme and of course Monpazier. There are many restored castles: in Biron, Beynac, Castelnaud... Don't forget the towns of the Middle Ages like Sarlat and Bergerac.
Sports
The hotel´s situation gives an excellent opportunity for exploring on foot, by bicycle (which you can rent via the hotel) or on horseback. Horse riding is Marije Capelle's favourite sport and she will be happy to help you.
If golf is your game, there are several excellent courses within half an hour´s drive.
Nature
In the Dordogne, every season has its own charm. Mild spring, warm summer and with the light here, a golden autumn. Each season lets you discover a different view of the Dordogne.
Gastronomy
The Périgord is the place if you like good food and wine. The Périgord offers many gastronomic delights: foie gras, truffles, duck, trout, quail and game. We will be happy to help you organize trips to markets, farms and vineyards.
